Happy National Transportation Day 2023..!
In 1946, the so-called DAMRI (Djawatan Angkoetan Motor Repoeblik Indonesia) was in charge of bus transportation development in Indonesia. From the Cikar (a traditional cart) - to motorised Buses. As far as my current understanding, this bus transportation could be called as the Bus 1.0.
The Bus 2.0, or the next generation for the bus transportation, was the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). Its history began in Curitiba, Brazil, with its previous term: "the Speedybus". The Curitiba's BRT was invented by Jaime Lerner, who acts as the City Mayor, and following is his quote for the public transportation:
"If you provide good alternatives for public transport, you won't have traffic problems"
To be realistic with the current condition of BRT Kawasan Metropolitan Semarang (is it rapid, is it speedy?), what should we do?
I suggest that we keep being the traffic (keep using our own motorised vehicles :p). However, I will call the BRT as "angkutan publik" instead of "angkutan umum", spread this term over and over during this year, and hope a miracle happens in 2024 :D
Nowadays, the phrase with "umum" has a pejorative/ low-opinion meaning (e.g. fasilitas umum, toilet umum). Somehow the term "angkutan publik" gives more hope for a city, because it indicates the city residents' daily needs.
